About us When Tourism becomes Culture Tourism was once an adjunct of knowledge. People travelled to satisfy their intellectual curiosity, to find out about different cultures and religions and visit new, little known territories. The program and customer service you have in place is exceptional. Bernice Firstly, let me say how much Brian and I enjoyed our tour with Vinarium. Everyone we met through Vinarium were a delight and made us feel welcome and special. Christine Maria in Piedmont was an excellent guide and Valentina in Tuscany was just outstanding. We would recommend Vinarium to others and feel free to use us as a reference in the future. Ed I am sure you aware what a unique tour-guide and driver Giacomo is but I thought I would emphasize the point as I travel for a living.

Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than vents ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano.
In contrast, flank eruptions can occur down to a few hundred metres altitude , close to or even well within the inhabited areas. Numerous villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions. Since , Etna has had four flank eruptions — in , — , — , and — Summit eruptions occurred in , — , January—April , and again in July—October The first known record of eruption at Etna is that of Diodorus Siculus.
The lava was largely diverted by these walls into the sea to the south of the city, filling the harbour of Catania. A small portion of lava eventually broke through a fragile section of the city walls on the western side of Catania and destroyed a few buildings before stopping in the rear of the Benedictine monastery, without reaching the centre of the town. Contrary to widespread reports of up to 15, or even 20, human fatalities caused by the lava, contemporaneous accounts written both in Italian and English mention no deaths related to the eruption but give very precise figures of the number of buildings destroyed, the area of cultivated land lost, and the economic damage.
Therefore, it is uncertain where the enormous number of fatalities can be attributed. One possibility is confusion between this eruption and an earthquake that devastated southeast Sicily including Catania 24 years later in

The exact date of its foundation is not recorded, but it appears from Thucydides that it came into existence slightly later than Leontini modern Lentini , which he claims was five years after Syracuse , or BC. His legislation was extended to the other Chalcidic cities, not only of Sicily, but of Magna Graecia also, as well as to his own country. Catania appears to have retained its independence up to the reign of the despot Hieron of Syracuse , whereupon in BC he expelled all the original inhabitants of Catania and replaced them with those he ruled over at Leontini – said to have numbered no less than 10, , consisting partly of Syracusans and Peloponnesians.
For this he was celebrated by Pindar , and after his death he received heroic honors from the citizens of his new colony. The old Chalcidic citizens were reinstated to the city in BC. However, no details from this period of its history are known, until the great Athenian expedition to Sicily part of the larger Peloponnesian War , when the Athenians invaded the city.
The Catanaeans at first refused to allow the Athenians into their city, but after the latter had forced an entrance, they found themselves compelled to honour the alliance of their invaders. Catania became the headquarters of the Athenian armament throughout the first year of the expedition, and the base of their subsequent operations against Syracuse. It is next mentioned in BC when it fell into the power of Dionysius I of Syracuse , who plundered the city and sold its citizens as slaves, after which he established a body of Campanian mercenaries.
These, however, quit in BC and retired to Aetna , on the approach of the great Carthaginian armament under Himilco and Mago. As a consequence he was attacked and expelled by Timoleon.

Map of Sicily Opinions expressed in this article do not necessarily reflect those of the publishers or editors of Best of Sicily. The cinematic and literary works mentioned here present sexually explicit content which may offend some readers. When one of our editors suggested this article, I thought she had spent too much time in the Sicilian sun!
But she made it clear that, in remaining faithful to our editorial policy, we would approach the topic based on what generally makes it in some way a little different from what’s commonplace outside Italy, and that we would focus on “alternate” relationships rather than sex per se, from the points of view of men , women and teens. The following descriptions are anecdotal based on experiences and are not meant to stereotype or generalise.
The sex lives of many Sicilians fall well outside our few profiles. Here in Sicily, sex itself isn’t too different from what is practiced elsewhere. It’s the situations that may be just a little different. And yes, we’re talking about relationships based on sex rather than long-term emotional attachments like marriage. A friend from New York, who now lives in Palermo but spent much of her adult life in Manhattan, claims to have seen a greater variety of sexual relationships between men and women in Sicily than she ever saw in the United States.
More precisely, she argues that the “unconventional” circumstances seem more prevalent here –things like fat old men with sexy young women, ugly professors involved with pretty students, and overt sexual harassment. As the daughter of Sicilians, the New Yorker is familiar with both societies. Instead, let’s say that a middle-aged American couple spends about a year in Sicily.
