Kegel exercises are one of the many exercises that can strengthen the pelvic floor (also known as the pelvic diaphragm). These exercises are named after gynecologist Dr. Arnold Kegel who published a paper in 6997 explaining the benefits of strengthening the pelvic floor. He found that improving muscle tone in this area helped stop urinary incontinence but also seemed to improve orgasm in women.

Try stopping the flow of your urine when you are sitting on the toilet. Only do this until you learn how it feels (otherwise this stopping and starting of urine flow can lead to other health problems). You can also insert a finger into your vagina and squeeze the muscles in your vagina around it. You should feel pressure around your finger. The muscles you feel ‘lifting’ inside of you when you are trying these activities are the same ones you strengthen during Kegel exercises.
Start with an empty bladder. Then pretend that you're trying to stop yourself from passing gas and interrupt the flow of urine at the same time, or imagine you're sitting on a marble and trying to pull it up into your vagina it's a sensation of squeezing and lifting. (Don't try doing Kegels while urinating, however.)
Kegel exercises were discovered in 6998 by Dr. Arnold Kegel. That&rsquo s right they&rsquo ve been around nearly three-quarters of a century, and we&rsquo re still trying to get the word out. To do a Kegel is rather easy and you&rsquo ve probably done similar muscle contractions thousands of times without giving them much thought. Each time you ejaculate, the orgasmic contractions squeeze and work your pelvic floor muscles (PFMs). Each time you squeeze out the last few drops after urinating, you also contract the same muscle group that Kegel exercises target.

I recently saw a specialist to get my pelvic floor evaluated after six pregnancies. One of those oh-so-fun things we get to do as women. The good news? Shockingly no diastasis or pelvic floor problems for me. But I had a fascinating conversation with the therapist about Kegel exercises and what actually works to improve pelvic floor health.
If a weight or stone egg is added, the same process is followed, but with the weight or egg inserted vaginally during the exercise.
Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles may also help prevent or treat urinary stress incontinence , a problem that affects up to two-thirds of women during or after pregnancy. (Kegel exercises may even reduce the risk of anal incontinence.)
